Mindful in May - 31 Day Meditation Challenge for a Very Good Cause

Moutain pose log A pinch and a punch for the first day of the month to you all. I cannot believe May has rolled around already, where has this year gone? A few days ago on Instagram I came across a month-long challenge which intrigued me greatly, called the Mindful in May Challenge. Today, May 1st, I signed up.

Basically, Mindful in May participants pledge themselves to meditate for 10 minutes every day for the 31 days of May. Upon registration you are sent guided mediations to help you with this endeavour. The benefits of daily meditation continue to astound me, with people claiming everything from improved sleep to spiritual awakening. Meditation, the practice of simply sitting, breathing and being, has been practiced for centuries, particularly by Buddhist monks. The whole purpose is to calm and focus your mind internally with the hope of reaching inner 'zen', peace or whatever else you want to call it. Meditation, due to its relaxing nature, is often very good for stress relief (in fact deep breathing associated with mediation literally reduces cortisol levels in the blood), relieving anxiety and nervous tension, calming a 'busy' or over active mind, improving mood and sleep. Meditation is also a great way to practice self-love, to repeat affirmations and to visualise the life and future you want. Basically, it is one of the very best things you can do for yourself and your spiritual wellbeing.

Along with the mediation component of the Mindful in May challenge, each participant also gets a fundraising page on the Mindful in May website, upon which people can make donations. Where do these donations go I hear you ask? Well that is the wonderful part - all the money raised goes towards a charity which helps provide clean water to poverty stricken nations. So through this challenge of meditating every day you not only change your life, but you change the world! Awesome? I think so.
